The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to initiate a city-wide dog census starting Wednesday. Partnering with World Veterinary Services, an NGO with a track record of successful dog population management in Goa, Coimbatore, and Erode, the initiative aims to systematically collect data on the city's canine residents.

Beginning July 10, trained personnel will survey dogs aged four months and older, documenting their vaccination status and other relevant details. Over a 60-day period, more than 50 volunteers will collaborate with GCC's malaria workers to map dog demographics across 200 wards, divided into 70 routes. The survey team will operate from 6 am to 8 am, collecting approximately 600 samples per route, focusing on gender, animal birth control status, and disease prevalence. This effort aims to inform effective neutering strategies to control the dog population.

GCC Commissioner J Radhakrishnan highlighted the importance of the census, stating,

"After the census, rigorous animal birth control measures will be pursued. This year alone, 10,100 stray dogs have been captured, with 7,000 sterilized. Over the past seven years, around 150,000 dogs have been sterilized under this program."

Student volunteers from city colleges will also participate in the census, which has been allocated a budget of ₹5 lakh. This follows a 2018 survey that recorded 59,000 stray dogs and a recent pilot survey in Royapuram that counted 3,000 dogs.

Additionally, Commissioner Radhakrishnan noted a decrease in complaints about stray cows, attributed to increased fines. This multi-faceted approach highlights GCC's commitment to effective animal population management and public safety.
