Chennai is set to take a significant step in addressing the needs of pet owners with the upcoming launch of its first dedicated pet park. The Chennai city corporation has approved a pilot project for a pet park located on Demonte Colony Street in the Teynampet zone, marking an exciting development for the city’s pet-loving community.
The concept of a pet park has been discussed since 2018 but faced delays due to a lack of perceived immediate need. However, rising instances of human-dog conflicts and the growing demand for designated pet spaces have pushed this initiative to the forefront. With an initial budget of Rs 1 crore, the project aims to create a safe and enjoyable environment for pets and their owners.
The new pet park will be situated within the existing corporation park on Demonte Colony Street. The area will be specifically designed for pets, featuring a designated walking space and a play area that can comfortably accommodate around 30 dogs. This setup is expected to provide a much-needed recreational spot for pets while easing tensions between pet owners and the general public.
Officials selected this location due to its proximity to licensed pet owners and its distance from busy roads, ensuring a peaceful environment for pets to play and exercise. “While pet licences are not mandatory for park entry, we encourage all pet owners to apply and obtain a licence. We noticed a significant number of licensed pet owners in this area who would benefit from this facility,” a city corporation official explained.
The introduction of this pet park is a welcomed relief for many pet owners who have faced difficulties on public streets. Sai Sharan from Alwarpet noted, “Separate spaces like these are fantastic as they allow pet owners to socialize and exercise their dogs without facing hostility.”
This new pet park is just the beginning. Officials plan to evaluate the success of this pilot project and consider additional locations for similar parks based on feedback and demand. For now, the Teynampet pet park stands as a promising new space for Chennai’s furry friends to enjoy.
