The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is set to inaugurate state-of-the-art pet clinics and animal birth control centers in three city neighborhoods by August. GCC Commissioner J. Radhakrishnan recently inspected the construction site of a pet clinic in Lloyds Colony and mandated its completion by August. Similar facilities in Kannamapet and Pulianthope are also on track to be finished within the same timeframe.
The Lloyds Colony facility, constructed at a cost of ₹7 crore, will feature a kennel on the first floor capable of housing around 160 dogs and companion animals. The ground floor will be equipped with a pet clinic, emergency and regular operation theatres, and advanced equipment. City Veterinary Officer Kamaludheen announced that the pet clinic services will be free of charge, although the civic body is still deliberating on extending operating hours, currently from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Once operational, the number of animal birth control procedures will increase from 65 to 110 daily. The new kennels at Lloyds Colony are designed to provide better healing environments by housing dogs separately, reducing infighting and infection rates. The advanced laboratories at these new facilities are expected to enhance the quality of surgeries.
The GCC has previously launched pet clinics in Sholinganallur and Meenambakkam. Additionally, the GCC is conducting a dog census, enlisting 40 volunteers with plans to recruit 10 more. Training for these volunteers will commence shortly, with mapping already completed and the census expected to conclude in August.
