The Calcutta Canine Club successfully organized its much-anticipated 91st, 92nd, and 93rd Championship Pointed All Breed Dog Shows from December 12th to 15th, 2024, at the NKDA Football Ground in Newtown, Kolkata. The event celebrated four decades of the club’s legacy and drew an impressive gathering of canine enthusiasts, breeders, and participants from across India and neighboring countries.
Founded on July 4th, 1984, the Calcutta Canine Club has established itself as a prestigious organization in the canine community, and this year’s championship showcased its tradition of excellence. With a record number of participants and exhibitors, the event reinforced the club’s reputation as a leader in hosting landmark dog shows.
The four-day event kicked off on December 12th with specialty shows featuring Dobermans, Boxers, Labradors, Pugs, and Dachshunds, organized by respective breed-specific clubs such as the Pug Club and the Dachshund Club. The excitement continued on December 13th with the German Shepherd Specialty Show, hosted by the German Shepherd Club.
The final two days focused on the main Championship All Breed Shows, where dogs competed across three rings for coveted titles such as Best in Show, Best Puppy in Show, and Best Indian Breed.
The championship was adjudicated by an esteemed panel of judges, including Mr. Geoff Blyth (Australia), Mr. Luiz Cabril Costa (Brazil), Mr. Dedy Tijahjono (Indonesia), and Mr. Nate Chang (Taiwan). Their expertise ensured fair evaluations and upheld the high standards of the competition.
The top performer of the 21st and 22nd Championship Show was Sombor Semper Wictor, a German Shepherd Dog (double coat, normal coat) owned by Suchismita Ghosh. He won the 1st Best in Show in the two championships and was adjudged the 4th Best in Show in the 93rd Championship Show.
The show saw enthusiastic participation from exhibitors showcasing dogs registered with the Kennel Club of India (KCI). In adherence to KCI regulations, all dogs underwent vet examinations, and exhibitors benching their dogs near the respective rings ensured smooth proceedings. The event also featured paid kennel facilities for convenience.
Since its inception, the Calcutta Canine Club has played a pivotal role in promoting canine welfare and excellence in dog breeding. Notable past milestones include hosting Kolkata’s first International Dog Show in 2007, setting a precedent for global participation. The 2024 championship continued this tradition, offering an opportunity for Indian breeds to shine alongside their international counterparts.
As the final ribbons were awarded, the Calcutta Canine Club concluded yet another successful chapter in its storied history. With its unwavering commitment to canine excellence, the club has set the stage for even grander events in the future, further cementing its place as a cornerstone of the canine community.
