Bengaluru Takes a Stand for Stray Animals: New Guidelines Issue

Bengaluru: In a major win for pet lovers, the city's civic body has issued new guidelines prohibiting apartment associations from banning pets.

The new guidelines aim to strike a balance between pet owners' rights, animal welfare, and residents' concerns. Key provisions include:

• Responsible Pet Ownership: Pet owners are encouraged to keep their pets clean, groomed, vaccinated, and neutered. Feeding schedules should be consistent to prevent aggressive behavior in animals.

• Feeding Restrictions: Feeding pets in public spaces is prohibited between 11:30 PM and 5 AM. Residents are also advised to avoid feeding raw meat and sugary biscuits to prevent hyperactivity. Additionally, leftover food should not be left on the curb to avoid attracting rodents. Feeding animals during peak public hours is discouraged to prevent aggressive behavior.

• RWAs and Pet Welfare: Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and apartment owners are mandated to ensure their bylaws do not harm domestic animals and should enforce existing animal welfare laws. RWAs must permit pets in common areas and lifts, requiring them to be leashed but not muzzled.

• Public Spaces and Animal Welfare: Public institutions, educational facilities, and tech parks are prohibited from harassing dogs and cats. They must designate feeding spots and times to support feeding by students, employees, and interested citizens.

These guidelines mark a significant step towards a more pet-friendly Bengaluru. By emphasizing responsible pet ownership and the rights of both humans and animals, the city aims to foster a harmonious co-existence.
