The new flight experience for dogs was introduced in April by Bark, a pet supply firm established in 2011 that provides dog food and other items. Given how stressful and difficult commercial air travel can be for animals, this airline is the second to promote itself as serving dogs before human customers.
Pets were initially allowed to ride in cabins instead of in kennels in commercial cargo holds thanks to K9 Jets, a UK-based public charter.
Bark's reservation website said that the first trip from New York to Los Angeles on Thursday is completely booked. The company said that it created the in-flight experience to improve long-distance dog travel for canines who are too big to go beneath the front seats of commercial airplanes.
At the moment, BARK Air flies to Los Angeles and London from New York. In reality, the flights go to Biggin Hill Airport (BQH), which is close to London, Van Nuys Airport (VNY), which is close to Los Angeles, and Westchester County Airport (HPN), which is near New York.
Bark Air is going to use roomy Gulfstream G5 aircraft to conduct public charter operations. It doesn't run or own any aircraft. A pass for one person is included with every canine ticket. Families can buy more passes as well. Under-18s are not allowed on board. Dogs are not limited in size or breed.
BARK Air only offers seats for up to 10 humans, each of which may bring their dog along, despite the aircraft's normal capacity of fifteen passengers. The tickets are for dogs, and they may travel with their favorite human, according to the airline's marketing.
The cost of the service is high. For one dog and one human, a one-way ticket from New York to Los Angeles in June costs $6,000. A ticket from New York to London is about $8,000.
Bark co-founder and CEO Matt Meeker said "This is cost-prohibitive for most families, but less expensive than most options today. And this is also how most innovative products and services began. Televisions, telephones, VCRs and DVD players, to automobiles, train and boat travel, and, yes, even human air travel — all of these started with very high prices until demand was proven and the costs could be brought lower by serving the masses."
