Pet owners planning to travel to the U.S. with their dogs will need to comply with new regulations announced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
These rules, effective from August 1, 2024, apply to pets entering the U.S. by land, air, or sea.
Travelers from countries classified as "dog rabies-free" or low-risk must complete this form before entering the U.S.
The form can be filled out on the day of travel but is recommended to be completed in advance. It's valid for six months and can be used multiple times, provided the dog hasn't visited a high-risk country.
For those traveling from high-risk countries like India, additional documents are needed.
Pet owners must complete the CDC Dog Import Form and provide either a U.S.-issued rabies vaccination certificate or a USDA-endorsed export health certificate.
All dogs must appear healthy, be at least six months old, and have a microchip implanted before being issued a rabies vaccine.
Previously, there was no specific form for dogs traveling from low-risk countries, making this a notable change in policy.
The United States has been free of dog rabies since 2007, but rabies remains a global concern, with the World Health Organization reporting approximately 59,000 rabies-related deaths annually worldwide.
These new CDC regulations aim to simplify the process while ensuring the safety and health of both pets and people entering the U.S.
Pet owners should review these rules and prepare accordingly to ensure a smooth journey for their furry companions.
