Former Union Minister Maneka Gandhi, along with other animal rights activists, has called on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to take immediate action to halt the practice of animal sacrifice in various parts of the state.
The group has also urged the Bihar government to prevent the illegal transportation of cattle from the state to Nepal, particularly ahead of the Gadhimai festival, where large-scale animal sacrifices are common.
In a recent letter to the chief minister, Maneka Gandhi highlighted the urgent need to address the issue. She called for measures to stop both animal sacrifices within the state and the smuggling of cows, buffaloes, goats, and pigeons from Bihar to Nepal. Her letter noted that the illegal trade of Indian buffaloes, worth approximately ₹10 million monthly, significantly contributes to this issue.
Representatives from other animal welfare organizations, including Acharya Prashant of the Prashant Advait Foundation, Alokparna Sengupta of Humane Society International/India, and Gauri Maulekhi of People for Animals Public Policy Foundation, recently met Bihar’s Chief Secretary Amrit Lal Meena. During the meeting, they pressed for immediate directives to curb animal sacrifice and the unlawful transport of animals.
At a subsequent press conference, Acharya Prashant emphasized the need to address what he termed as "barbaric and outdated practices." He noted that such activities violate both Supreme Court directives and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, as well as contradict the core principle of non-violence, or 'Ahimsa'.
He highlighted that during the Gadhimai festival and other similar events in Nepal, districts bordering Nepal—such as East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Supaul, and West Champaran—experience increased smuggling activities. Acharya Prashant described the public spectacle of animal sacrifices as deeply disturbing to the cultural, religious, and ethical sensibilities of most Indians, who are guided by values rooted in compassion and non-violence.
