The Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu has experienced a remarkable increase in the number of migratory birds this year.
According to a report by The Indian Express, the sanctuary saw a rise from just 800 birds in 2023 to an impressive 3,500 to 4,000 in 2024.
Spread over 36 hectares along the Madurai-Karaikudi Highway, the sanctuary hosts over 20 species of birds annually, including Egrets, Indian Spot-Bill Ducks, Darters, Asian Openbill Storks, and Black-Headed Ibises.
Many of these birds travel from regions as far as Australia, Europe, and Southeast Asia, with the storks and ibises using the sanctuary for roosting and breeding.
Villagers near the sanctuary view the early arrival of birds as an indicator of monsoon patterns.
Nesting in lower areas suggests lighter rainfall, while higher terrain nesting predicts heavy rains. In a long-standing tradition, locals have refrained from bursting crackers during Deepavali to avoid disturbing the birds.
To further protect the avian visitors, forest officials have implemented several measures, including the relocation of natural predators like monkeys and pythons, maintaining fish fingerlings in nearby water bodies for bird sustenance, and removing invasive vegetation.
Anti-poaching teams and monitoring units have also been deployed to safeguard the birds from human interference and disease outbreaks.
Additionally, the forest department partnered with the Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History to study the impact of sound pollution from the nearby highway on bird behavior.
Preliminary findings revealed no significant disturbances.
This year’s surge in bird numbers highlights the sanctuary’s improved conservation efforts and its importance as a refuge for migratory species.
