An attention-grabbing tactic by Bengaluru’s celebrity dog breeder S. Satish, famously known as Satish Cadaboms, has landed him in hot water.
He courted a new controversy recently when he attended the pre-launch party of Vishnu Priya, a Kannada movie. Satish took with him what he proclaimed to be a 7-month-old Caucasian Shepherd-Wolf Dog hybrid puppy. The controversial ball started rolling when he declared the dog – intended as a gift to the actor Shreyas K Manju – to be worth Rs 50 crores. He also added that the breed existed only with one person in the US, and had been ‘imported’ recently.
The outrageous announcement grabbed eyeballs, as it was meant to. It also led the ethical dog breeder community in Karnataka to sit up and take a very close look. So close, in fact, that it led Banuchandra Hosmani, a renowned Kennel Club of India (KCI) breeder, to file a case against Satish.
A virtual copy of the complaint is with Happy Pet. The start of the complaint states, “Request immediate action concerning the illegal import, promotion, and possible smuggling of hybrid wolfdogs in India. This activity is in clear violation of the Wildlife Protection Act, which prohibits without the explicit consent of the wildlife warden.”
Via the complaint, Hosmani has requested various municipal and wildlife authorities to take stringent action, scrutinize Satish’s financial transactions, and enhance public awareness regarding the legal status of animal imports.
“Activists should question the possibility of a completely new race of dogs coming up due to cross-breeding with foreign breeds,” Hosmani said while speaking to Happy Pet. “This could lead to a completely new bloodline which might be dangerous to dogs while encouraging illegal, unethical breeding.”
Satish Cadaboms is not new to creating controversy around dogs and is known to buy expensive breeds. In 2023, Satish had famously bought a Caucasian Shepherd from a Hyderabad owner.
According to sources, a person wanted to buy the dog from him, irrespective of cost and offered to pay Rs 20 crores for it. This led Satish to announce to the world that he had a Rs 20 crore dog.
In 2016, he became the first person in India to own two Korean Mastiffs which cost him Rs 1 crore each. He had imported the dogs from China and made national news by picking them up in a Rolls Royce and a Range Rover from the airport.
Normally, there is no fixed MRP on a dog. There are various factors that decide the cost of a particular dog, irrespective of breed.
According to a Supertails survey done in 2024, the factors include Breed Popularity and Rarity, Pedigree and Documentation, Age and Training Level, Location and Market Demand, and the Breeder you are buying your dog from.
But does it really make sense? Dogs worth crores? The breeding community across India doesn’t think so. In fact, the Rs 20 crore Caucasian Shepherd breed might cost anything between Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 Lakh only.
It is dangerous and troublesome for the ethical dog breeding world in India if free trade of foreign breeds becomes a common occurrence. The ongoing case against Satish Cadaboms has placed a much-needed spotlight on India’s pet trade laws. With growing concerns over unethical breeding, inflated dog pricing, and illegal imports, this controversy could serve as a wake-up call for stricter regulations.
If left unchecked, such practices could encourage more backyard breeders and unregulated dog sales—harming both animals and responsible breeders. As the legal battle unfolds, it remains to be seen whether this case will lead to meaningful change in India's pet industry.
